Robert Hughes - Art Critic

Robert Hughes, the Australian art critic famed for his vitriol and his deep dislike of the contemporary art "hypermarket",  has died aged 74.

Great one liners :)  "The presence of a {Damien} Hirst in a collection is a sure sign of dullness of taste"

"The greater the artist, the greater the doubt. Perfect confidence is given to the less talented as a consolation prize."

"The new job of art is to sit on the wall and get more expensive."

"In art there is no progress, only fluctuations of intensity."

"I have never been against new art as such; some of it is good, much is crap, most is somewhere in between."

"There is virtue in virtuosity, especially today, when it protects us from the tedious spectacle of ineptitude."
